Everything is behind this year it seems. Spring was cold and rainy. Summer never seemed to want to arrive. Crops were late or failed to germinate. I fell behind in even posting anything to my blog, for a variety of reasons. But: Here I am again: This year was my first season growing garlic in earthboxes. I just harvested the… View Post
Snakefly
Yesterday George found this very interesting looking insect in the garden. It turns out it is a snakefly – I got an ID from Davesgarden.com, which is a great site for all things gardening. It’s a beneficial insect, predates on many garden pests, like aphids and others. I had never seen one before today! Here are some photos of this… View Post
Such a cold and rainy spring
Things are so late this year. Usually I have most everything planted and done this time of year. I did get part of my tomato plants (11) in the ground yesterday (+4 in earthboxes), but that’s just about 3 weeks later than usual. And I was hoping to get a little time to be in the garden today, but it… View Post
Transplanted pepper and eggplant seedlings
Today I transplanted most of my pepper and eggplant seedlings (60 of them) from the Bio-Dome to small green pots. A few days ago I transplanted the first of my onion plants to 4 Earthboxes (1 variety per box) I used to say I would never grow onions in Earthboxes, because of the recommendation of 10 per box. I am… View Post
Planted Pepper and Eggplant Seeds
On March 17 I planted a 60 cell Bio Dome with Hot Peppers and Eggplant, and an additional 22 cell tray with Sweet Peppers. I also reseeded a few cells of tomatoes that had not sprouted yet. March 19 I planted a tray with a variety of blooming plants, like Marigold, Foxglove, Morning Glory, Salvia & Malva, and set them… View Post
March 7: Planted Tristar Strawberry Plants
March 7. I have been growing Strawberries in earthboxes for the last few years, but this year I decided it is time to do some in the ground, so I dedicated one of my 4X4 beds to strawberries. Tristar is well suited for growing in this area, and I love the flavor of this berry! I also got a Bio-Dome… View Post

This is what it looks like today, less… View Post
Planted flower seeds 2-17-10
Today I planted a bunch of seeds, mostly flower seeds, and set them on heat mats out in the garage under lights. Planted a lot of Pansy, also Dusty Milller, Alyssum, Snapdragon, 4 O’Clock, Lupines and got some Wolfberry seeds planted that may be too old – we will see!
Great Parsnip Variety – Gladiator
I just harvested this parsnip. Gladiator is turning out to be a great variety! Two days ago, I moved the onions, broccoli and cabbage off the heatmat and under lights.
Getting more seeds started
Yesterday, February 7, I got some more seeds started. This batch was started in a Park Seed Bio Dome. Planted Broccoli, Cabbage, Parsley and Celery. They are now on a heat mat, side by side with the onions – and the onions have already started coming up!
Planting Onions from Seed
Time to start onion seeds
It is time to start onion seeds, so I just ordered up seeds from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds. This year I decided to try some new varieties, I’ll be growing 3 new onions and 1 I have grown before. Yellow of Parma (grew this last year) Gold Princess (new for me this year) Jaune Paille Des Vertus (new for me… View Post
